“If you don’t know where you’re going, you might wind up someplace else.” – Yogi Berra
So the dream has come true. After years of planning, you have retired to Medellin. Love the weather. Love the people. Love not working nine to five.
Now what? Do you have goals, a clear path for the rest of your life?
There may be many yet-unanswered questions.
The poet Rainier Maria Rilke in his Letters to a Young Poet advised:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
So – articulating your questions is an important first step. Some stream-of-conciousness examples follow.
As to the Past:
Have I left behind unresolved issues?
What do I miss? What am I missing?
Are there past relationships needing healing or resolution?
The old saying is “Wherever you go, there you are.” – Have I just brought my problems with me to South America?
As for the Present:
What would I like to change? About myself: my mind, body, emotions, spirit?
What would I like to change about someone else?
How might I go about it?
What needs resolution?
What makes me happy?
What makes me sad?
What makes me angry?
As for the Future:
What am I going to do for the rest of my life?
Where will I find meaning?
How do I connect with like-minded friends?
How can I contribute to this world?
What is my relationship to – my body, nature, spirituality, the local community, the World community?
Daily journaling and meditation are deeply informative ways of honoring and listening to your Inner Self. And it is often extremely helpful to have a compassionate, nonjudgmental companion on your journey who listens with you, as together you invite intuitive understanding and clarity.
